BUILD A KIT

Having the right things on hand when a disaster strikes can make a big difference. Store enough supplies for everyone in your household for at least three days. Keep them in a container that’s easy to carry, such as a large backpack or duffle bag.

Kit basics:
1. At least one gallon of water per person per day
2. Non-perishable, high-protein, easy-to-prepare foods: energy bars, canned items, peanut butter, etc.
3. Flashlight and extra batteries
4. Bandages and a first aid kit
5. Medications: prescription and non-prescription
6. Battery-operated radio with extra batteries
7. Tools: wrench, can opener, screwdriver, hammer, pliers, knife, etc.
8. Equipment: duct tape, plastic sheeting, garbage bags and ties
9. Clothing: a change of clothes for everyone, including sturdy shoes and gloves
10. Personal items: eyeglasses/contact lens, comfort items such as toys and books
11. Sanitary supplies: toilet paper, towelettes, feminine supplies, soap, etc.
12. Documentation: copies of identification, insurance policies, birth certificates, passports, etc.
13. Money: extra cash and coins
14. Important numbers: current list of family phone numbers and e-mail addresses, including someone out of the area in case local phones are out of service
15. Pet supplies: food, water, leash, litter box, medications, etc.
16. Map of local area in case of evacuation
